What should you charge an hour?
Busy all year with nothing left over usually means the rate is too low. Start from what you want to earn, add what the business costs to run, and divide by the hours you can really bill.
- Billable hours are the hours a customer pays for. Driving, quoting, ordering parts and paperwork don’t count.
- Yearly costs are everything the business pays whether you work or not: vehicle, insurance, tools, software, phone and licenses.
- Profit is separate from your pay. It’s what lets the business save, grow and handle a slow month.
- This is a planning tool, not tax or accounting advice. Everything runs in your browser.

Charge at least$78/hrBreak-even is $65.97 an hour. The rest is your 15% profit.
The math: ($70,000 pay + $25,000 costs) ÷ 1,440 billable hours = $65.97, then ÷ (1 − 15%) for profit. Your numbers never leave this page.
